What is Housing First?
At its core, BetterBox Project is a movement to raise awareness about the solution to end homelessness via the Housing First model.
For more than 20 years, Mental Health Association Oklahoma has utilized the Housing First model to provide safe, decent and affordable housing to people, regardless of where they are in their mental health treatment or sobriety from drugs or alcohol.
The truth is that when people have a safe place to live, they can finally focus on making healthy choices to get on and maintain their path to recovery. It’s not just about providing housing, it’s about connecting them with services and supports for mental and physical health, drug and alcohol treatment, counseling, job training and education. All of those pieces are critical for the housing first model to be successful.
Housing First doesn’t just help people weave themselves back into the fabric of our community, it also saves tax-payers money.
Right now tax-payers spend approximately $30,000 per year to leave someone on the streets. It only costs $25 a day to provide someone housing and services. This is much cheaper than leaving them homeless, in jail or in emergency rooms. And it’s just the right thing to do.
